We just scored this fantastic collection of bird identification books by our mentor Alan Reid with beautiful illustrations by Susan McInnes. They are a handy size to take on a walk and have tonnes of information. Guess it’s the start of the Mirawara resource library!
This is the seed that Mirawara wants to bring to fruition, helping our community connect with each other, creating better understanding of our cultural diversity and the connection we all have with our natural environment. Mirawara is about weaving stories of experiential learning and connection with nature.

We had a great meeting with Alan Reid today and he agreed to mentor us which is very exciting. Alan has been in the environment, education and outdoors field most of his life with many publications, projects and important positions to his name. Now retired, Alan spends part of his time with family in Castlemaine so we’ll catch up with him to get feedback on our programs and connect with some of the things he is doing.
Our new Edelrid ropes are the only brand that has Bluesign certification. This certifies that there are no harmful substances in the rope or used during its production. Also that manufacturing is resource efficient and environmentally friendly. These ropes are produced with 89% less water consumed, 62% less CO2 emissions, 63% less energy and 63% less chemicals! Mirawara will preference goods and services that demonstrate this kind of environmental intelligence.
We were so excited to try our brand new gear at Mt Macedon yesterday. A big thank-you to Steve at Rock Hardware in Bendigo for his excellent advice and supplying the first of our climbing equipment: ropes, shoes, harnesses, carabiners, helmets and more. We intend to purchase equipment and services locally where we can to contribute to our community. The trip to Macedon was the one of the last few recce trips checking out our gear and setups prior to beginning formal operation.
Weather’s better so off we go! Join us to christen our brand new Mirawara climbing gear! These are the last of the recce trips as we try our new gear and get things sorted to begin formally operating. We hope to offer memberships as a way to keep our trips accessible for all our friends who have been climbing with us in the past.

We have our first formal ‘gig’ with Mondo Lounge in December. Mondo Lounge is a youth space supported by Mount Alexander Shire Council. Mirawara will be heading out for a summer afternoon Mondo walk on Mount Alexander in early December. Check out the Mondo Lounge program for details of this and other events. We hope to be doing more with this mob in the future.
After a winter on our computers working on documents and procedures for our non-profit structure, risk management and insurance we can finally see the summit and we’re almost there.
We’ve also just got our first gig with the Mondo Lounge we’ve named it the Mondo Walk – sounds like it should be a dance move.
